Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer urges South-East govs to declare May 30 public holiday

  The Lead Counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has called on the governors in the South-East region to declare May 30 as a public holiday. Ejiofor made this known in a press statement issued on Thursday while reacting to the May 30 sit-at-home declared by IPOB. Recall IPOB asked a sit-at-home in the region to be regarded as a special day to remember and reflect on the death of over five million South Easterners, who were killed during the Civil War, which lasted from July 6, 1967, to January 15, 1970. Ejiofor said, “It is a time of introspection, a moment to consider the position of Biafrans in modern-day Nigeria and their relevance in the broader national context. Unfortunately, the issues that ultimately led to the Biafran war are still present within the policies and decisions of the government. Ohaneze Ndigbo meets Nnamdi Kanu in DSS custody

  The leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo is currently meeting with the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu at the Headquarters of the Directorate of State Services (DSS) in Abuja. The delegation led by the President of the apex Igbo Socio-Cultural body, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, entered the DSS Complex at about 1:05pm. Although the details of the meeting are yet to be made public, it was gathered that the ongoing sit-at-home order in commemoration of the Biafra Heroes Day will feature.

Outrage as school children in uniform are seen carrying buckets containing concrete on their heads during school hours

A suspected member of staff at a school was confronted by a passer-by who saw students being subjected to manual labour during school hours.   In a video shared online by TikTok user @OlalereMary, the students, wearing school uniform, are seen carrying buckets on their head, while conveying its contents from one location to another.   The woman who captured the video said it was concretes that the children had on their heads.   She confronted the woman who was supervising the children and asked why they were carrying heavy load on their head instead of being in class.   "No, it's not heavy. Am I not the one putting it on their heads?" the woman said.   However,  the lady filming ordered the children to drop the load and return to school.   As the woman tried to object, the one filming pushed the buckets off the head of the children and they fell and broke.

Discos monthly revenue rises by N5bn despite outage in several parts of the country

The electricity distribution companies raised their monthly revenue from N95bn in January to N100bn in March 2024 despite low power generation in several parts of the nation. According to new data released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, N97bn revenue was generated in February,  a time when the country experienced a huge drop in power supply. In January, Nigeria was thrown into nationwide blackouts due to gas shortages as gas companies refused to supply gas to electricity-generating companies due to unpaid debts. The power generation that had been dangling around 4,000MW dropped drastically below 2,500MW at a point, affecting the capacity of the distribution companies to supply electricity to their consumers.   Data from the NERC showed Discos received 2,577 gigawatt-hours of power and billed 2,072GWh of the energy received, recording 80 per cent billing efficiency in January. Court jails woman six months for currency racketeering in Lagos

  Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, convicted and sentenced one Adeyinka Bilikis Gbadamosi to six months imprisonment for currency racketeering. Gbadamosi was arraigned by the Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on a one-count charge bordering on currency Racketeering.   The count reads: “That you, Adeyinka Bilikis Gbadamosi, on the 27th of April, 2024 in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, engaged in hawking the total sum of N897,900 (Eight Hundred and Ninety Seven Thousand, Nine Hundred Naira) in N200 Naira note denomination, with serial numbers 688101 and N500 Naira note denomination, with serial numbers 315501 issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 21(4) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2007.”   She pleaded “guilty” to the charge when it was read to her.    Follow
