Kenya rocked by fresh protests despite president’s U-turn over tax bill

Fresh protests dubbed “One Million People March” began Thursday, with demonstrators calling for roads leading to the capital Nairobi to be blocked. Others threatened to occupy the State House, the president’s office, and the official residence. In a surprise move on Wednesday, Ruto said he would not sign the finance bill, saying he had been “listening keenly” to the Kenyan people. He had been facing escalating protests over the bill, with a civil society organization saying at least 23 people had died in clashes. But so far his move has failed to quell the demonstrations. Yahaya Bello’s lawyer applies to withdraw from case

  A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Adeola Adedipe, on Thursday, June 27, applied to the Federal High Court in Abuja to withdraw his appearance in court for the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello.   Bello is facing a 19-count charge bordering on his alleged complicity in money laundering, breach of trust and misappropriation of public funds to the tune of about N80.2billion.   Following his absence in court for his scheduled arraignment, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, urged the trial judge to dock his lawyers for failing to fulfil an undertaking they made to ensure his availability for trial.   Lead counsel for the EFCC, Mr. Kemi Pinhero, SAN, prayed the court to punish the two senior lawyers that always represented the former governor, insisting that they have breached the rules of professional conduct.   Pinhero, SAN, argued that Order 31(3) of Rules of Professional Conduct for legal practitioners stipulated that any lawyer that failed to

  Nkechi Blessing has fired back at  Verydarkman  for his recent claim. According to VDM, Nkechi Blessing, Iyabo Ojo, and Papaya Ex were not invited to the main wedding, only the after-party. This caused quite a commotion online, but Nkechi Blessing decided to take a subtle approach on her Instagram page. Instead of addressing the issue directly, she mentioned that she’s not going to talk about what everyone expects her to talk about.   Kenya’s President William Ruto says he will withdraw a finance bill containing controversial tax hikes after deadly protests which saw parliament set ablaze on Tuesday. In an address to the nation, he said it was clear that Kenyans “want nothing” to do with the bill. “I concede,” he said, adding that he would not sign the bill into law. At least 22 people were killed in Tuesday’s protests, according to the state-funded Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHRC).

Angel Unigwe’s legal team responds to Kanayo’s allegations

Teen actress Angel Unigwe’s team has replied to the charges of veteran actor   Kanayo O. Kanayo   accused Angel of professional misbehavior. Kanayo had threatened to ruin her future endeavors after alleging that she had broken her contract with him .However, Unigwe’s manager, Chief Juliet Kings, responded with a strongly worded letter rejecting the charges and outlining the circumstances surrounding the film production in issue.   Following the recent online battle between Verydarkman and Paulo Okoye, famous millionaire businessman   Obi Cubana   has urged bloggers to avoid promoting young people who insult elders. It should be noted that popular Nigerian activist, Verydarkman had called out Iyabo Ojo, stating she was never invited to Davido’s main wedding, but to his after-party. Paulo Okoye had reprimanded him for the comments, prompting Verydarkman to redirect his @ttack on Paulo. Following this, Obi Cubana moved to Instagram to urge bloggers to stop paying attention to young people and youths who insult elders. He believes that giving them such attention will simply enable and encourage them on. “Dear blogs; pls stop giving visibility to youth insulting elders!
