CAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying: Nigeria Finally Seal Return, Zambia Qualify Again

With the fourth and final round of the CAF Women’s Olympic qualifying tournament drawing to a close this week, the stage is finally set for the women’s football tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics this summer. Nigeria and Zambia were the last two teams to qualify, as they beat South Africa and Morocco respectively in their final ties.

Nigeria 1-0 South Africa

Nigeria were the best of the African teams at the last World Cup as they took would-be finalists England to penalties in their Round of 16 tie, so the Super Falcons would have hoped to build on that run by securing a return to the Olympics after missing out in the last three editions.Their route to the final qualifying round had been fairly smooth as they ultimately comfortably defeated Ethiopia in the second round thanks to a big home leg before making the most of a sole goal in two legs against Cameroon. South Africa also had a bit of a surprise draw on the road in the first leg of their second-round tie against DR Congo, but they too followed up with a home win before dispatching Tanzania 4-0 on aggregate in the third round.

Both teams knew that the final playoff tie would prove to be a much tougher test with very fine margins involved. Indeed, that proved to be the case. Nigeria edged out the home leg 1-0 thanks to Rasheedat Ajibade’s penalty on the stroke of half-time, earning a win that was hardly undeserved because they were the better team on the balance of play as well.


This advantage forced South Africa to take the impetus in the second leg, but the Super Falcons crucially did not defend too deep and made sure that their opponents had to work hard to sustain pressure. Through this approach, they ensured neither team could pose a significant goal-threat, gladly taking a goalless draw that gave them a ticket to Paris for the summer.

A heavily pregnant Nigerian   woman   sparked discussion when she went into labor minutes after posting a video on   TikTok , ultimately losing her   twins . In a video she shared on her TikTok page from her hospital bed, the woman revealed that she had posted on TikTok shortly before going into labor. However, she disclosed that she lost her twins during labor at the hospital. The video carried a caption that better explains the event: “Few minutes after posting on TikTok, labor took place. God, who did I offend? I lost the twins you put in me. I have no joy left in me. FCT police drafted to Abuja school where students were filmed bullying their classmate The FCT Police Command has dispatched experienced officers to the Leads British International School grounds to conduct inquiries into the reported cases of bullying.     A statement from the Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh, reads   “In a proactive response to alarms raised by some members of the public regarding videos circulating on social media depicting the bullying of students at the above mentioned school, the FCT Police Command is on top of the situation and has deployed seasoned officers to the school premises for investigations and to forestall any possible breakdown of law and order.”

Bobrisky pleads guilty to Naira abuse as court strikes out Money Laundering charges Popular cross-dresser, Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye aka Bobrisky, has pleaded guilty to the Naira abuse charge leveled against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Bobrisky was arraigned before the Federal High Court, Lagos on a six-count charge bordering on alleged Abuse of the Naira and alleged Money Laundering  When the charge was read, Bobrisky pleaded guilty to the first four counts bordering on Naira abuse.  Before the charge was read, the EFCC’s counsel, Suleiman Suleiman, however asked the court to strike out counts five and six bothering on Money laundering allegations.   Justice Abimbola Awogboro subsequently struck out counts five and six.   Bobrisky was then arraigned on only counts one to four charges. When the counts were read, Bobrisky was asked if he understood the charge that was read to him, he replied, “yes, I am guilty”.
